Hemp, Marijuana, and Cannabis

It’s important to note the difference between cannabis, hemp, and marijuana. Cannabis Sativa is a species of plant that has existed for thousands of years, with a long history of human use in many cultures. Both hemp and marijuana are varieties within this species. Hemp has been used for fiber for about 10,000 years and was legally grown in the US for its fiber until 1937. The ban was just lifted in 2018. Marijuana is the psychoactive variety of Cannabis Sativa, and it is still illegal federally, although many states including California have legalized it. It may be sold only within dispensaries, and to adults.
Therefore, any CBD oil that is available outside of a dispensary is not sourced from marijuana and is not psychoactive. It is derived from hemp and is federally legal in all 50 states.

What Is CBD?

CBD is shorthand for cannabidiol, which is one of the main active compounds found in cannabis and hemp. The entire family of compounds found in cannabis is called cannabinoids. THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, is another active compound. CBD has long been acknowledged for its healing properties. It’s particularly useful to induce a sensation of relaxation and calm. People use it for a range of complaints, from pain to muscle spasms to anxiety to sleep issues. It can be applied topically or consumed orally.

CBD and Your Dog

Scientists have been studying the healing properties of CBD for some years, but there is not a huge body of evidence available yet. This is especially true for assessing it’s healing power on dogs. However, scientists do know that cannabinoids interact with the central and peripheral nervous systems, which both help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state. This interaction is also understood to happen with dogs.

What Dog Health Problems Can I Treat with CBD?

Studies have been launched, but there’s still no definitive scientific data on CBD as a treatment for dogs. However, dog owners do share anecdotal evidence suggesting they find it useful to treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, and to control seizures in dogs. Further anecdotal evidence, for humans and pets, suggests that cannabidiol offers cardiac benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, and appetite stimulation and that it discourages or counters nausea and anxiety. It may also have anti-cancer benefits. A small study has suggested that CBD reduced seizure frequency in a group of epileptic dogs.

If you would like to treat your dog with CBD, proceed with caution. Always discuss your treatment plan with your veterinarian, and follow their dosage advice. For both humans and pets, it’s best to start cautiously, monitor closely and gradually increase the dosage only if necessary, and if there’s evidence the patient is tolerating it well. Common human side effects include a dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, a sensation of light-headedness, and drowsiness. Be alert for your dog displaying any of these side effects.
